BMW i3 to go the distance

29th July 2016

This Sunday, Simon Summerby-Bent, Nigel Freshman and Richard Dean are setting off on an epic journey in a BMW i3 to break not just one, but two world records! The trio is attempting to set a new record for the fastest time to drive a BMW i3 from Lands End to John O’Groats and the record for the least time charging an electric vehicle during that journey.

Their efforts will highlight the capabilities of pure electric vehicles, and show that range needn’t be a concern for drivers, even when travelling the longest of journeys. This kind of long-distance travel is only getting easier with electric vehicles, as 96% of motorway service stations now have rapid chargers. These have the capacity to charge an electric vehicle to 80% in around 30 minutes.

Simon, Nigel and Richard’s 886 mile journey will start in Lands End on Sunday 31st July, and they will be attempting to travel the full distance in under 24 hours. The public charging infrastructure will be used throughout, and their route has been carefully planned to include around 14 stops to charge.

When asked about the challenge, Simon said: “The idea came from my son Flynn, who received the Guinness World Book of Records as a stocking-filler. I have always been an early adopter of new tech and gadgets and I wanted to do something unique and environmentally friendly, so I thought why not break two world records with the BMW i3.”

We’re wishing them the best of luck with their journey, and we’ll certainly be following them using #i3worldrecord! To find out more, you can head over to

Nottingham follows the suitcase

28th July 2016

Last week, our #FollowTheSuitcase competition arrived in Nottingham, and one lucky winner walked away with a cool £750 – the amount drivers can save on fuel per year by switching to an electric vehicle.

During the competition, we travelled across Nottingham in a pure electric Renault ZOE with a suitcase containing the money. To be in with a chance of winning, people had to follow our journey online using clues posted on our Facebook and Twitter feeds to figure out our final destination. The winner was the first person to  tweet a selfie to @GoUltraLow with the car when we arrived.

Nottingham residents really got caught up in the excitement of #FollowTheSuitcase, and we were greeted with quite a crowd at the final destination – the home of Notts County FC, Meadow Lane. Huge congratulations go to our winner, Will, who was the first to tweet his selfie.

Councillor Nick McDonald from Nottingham City Council was present to award the money to Will and chat about the initiatives Nottingham is introducing as a result of being named a Go Ultra Low City back in January.

Thanks to everyone who came down on the day, and keep an eye out for the next #FollowTheSuitcase competition coming soon!

Even if you missed out on the competition, you could save £750 a year by switching to an electric vehicle. Find out more here:

#FollowTheSuitcase competition coming to Nottingham

14th July 2016

Next week, we’ll be bringing our #FollowTheSuitcase competition to Nottingham to give residents the chance to win £750! On the morning of Thursday 21st July, we’ll be setting off on a journey around the city in an all-electric Renault ZOE. To be in with a chance of winning, you’ll need to follow our journey online. We’ll be giving away clues for our final destination as we go, and all you have to do is figure it out, turn up, and tweet a selfie @GoUltraLow with the car to be in with a chance of winning.

The £750 being given away is the same amount that you could save on fuel per year by switching to an electric car. This is due to the lower running costs of electric vehicles, which are as little as 2p per mile, compared to petrol/diesel cars which range from 10-12p per mile.

The competition is being backed by Nottingham City Council, which secured funding at the start of this year to become one of the UK’s first Go Ultra Low Cities. The Government funding will enable the city to introduce a wide range of initiatives to help increase the uptake of electric vehicles and support greener motoring across the region.

Keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter feeds, or visit, for more information as we reveal it.

Electric car owners park for free in Milton Keynes

8th July 2016

Get frustrated with the cost or availability of parking in your area?

Electric car drivers in Milton Keynes now have the privilege of parking for free in 15,000 parking spaces across the city with a new “Green Parking Permit”. The scheme was launched on Thursday 7th July by Transport Minister Andrew Jones, and is the first initiative to be delivered as part of the Government’s  Go Ultra Low Cities scheme.

Milton Keynes is one of several Go Ultra Low Cities across the UK planning to boost the uptake of electric vehicles, through launching benefits for existing EV drivers and increasing the motivation for petrol or diesel motorists to switch. Other cities awarded a share of the £40 million include Bristol, London and Nottingham.

Transport Minister Andrew Jones said “Thanks to the £9 million of funding we have provided, thousands of local residents will now be able to park their electric cars for free. This grant will also help to create an Electric Vehicle Experience Centre in the city and open up bus lanes to electric car drivers.”

The Go Ultra Low Cities scheme is part of a wider £600 million investment from the Government to encourage electric vehicle uptake in the UK, with the aims to improve air quality and create jobs. The goal is to make every new car or van sold in the UK by 2040 a zero emission vehicle.

Future plans in Milton Keynes include:

  • Charging Hubs, where electric vehicles can be fully recharged in around 30min
  • Charging posts close to residential areas
  • An EV experience centre where potential owners can try before they buy
  • Priority for EVs in bus lanes
  • Destination charging at popular locations including supermarkets, hotels and leisure facilities

Over 70,000 British drivers have already switched to an electric car. Join them – try our electric car selector now.
