Hyundai joins the Go Ultra Low line-up

29th March 2017

Go Ultra Low has welcomed a new electric car manufacturer to the campaign, as Hyundai Motors commits to an ultra low emission future and joins the consortium. Ultra low emission vehicles are become increasingly popular in the UK, and this move indicates another manufacturer’s willingness to invest in its electric vehicles.

Hyundai joins the campaign at an exciting time for electric motoring, as the total number of EVs on UK roads is expected to surpass 100,000 by the middle of this year. 2016 was a record year for registrations, with numbers up 29% on 2015, and this growth is set to continue.

Hyundai’s IONIQ  pure electric and the innovative ix35  hydrogen fuel cell vehicle expand the variety of ultra low emission vehicles available in the UK. Today, there are more than 35 plug-in models (covering fully electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen-powered) on the market – four times the number on the market just five years ago.

To book a test drive with the IONIQ or any of the cars from the Go Ultra Low campaign, use our car selector tool.

Test drive an EV at Brands Hatch this weekend

27th March 2017

The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) kicks off this weekend at Brands Hatch in Kent and, to mark this, we’ve partnered with EVOLUTION to bring its electric Motor Show to the racetrack for the 1st and 2nd April.

As well as the racing excitement, you’ll be able to take a closer look at the full line-up of Go Ultra Low cars, including fully electric, plug-in hybrid and hydrogen vehicles from the likes of BMW, Audi, Volkswagen and Hyundai. You’ll find out more about what it’s like to own an EV, including the costs-saving benefits, and we’ll be there all weekend to answer any of your electric motoring questions.

All of the vehicles there will be available for test drives on sections of the Brands Hatch track, so remember to bring your driving licence if you’d like to get behind the wheel of one of our EVs.

Although the Motor Show is free, you will need to have a ticket to the BTCC event in order to enter the venue. Find more information on how to book tickets on the Brands Hatch website.

If you can’t make it to Brands Hatch this weekend, you can still book a test drive with an electric car anytime through our car selector tool here.

Government funding gives boost to electric taxis

22nd March 2017

Electric taxis could soon become much more commonplace on the streets of major UK cities, as the Department of Transport today announced £64 million of investment to promote their use.

The investment will support two schemes, the first being a new £50 million Plug-in Taxi Grant which will make it easier for taxi drivers to make the switch to electric. The Grant will give drivers up to £7,500 off the price of a new taxi. As well as helping improve local air quality in cities, drivers will be able to take advantage of the lower running costs of an electric vehicle and could save around £2,800 on fuel each year as well as other benefits, including Tax reductions.

The second scheme will see £14 million dedicated to a programme to install chargepoints in 10 council areas. The cities are Birmingham, Coventry, London, Nottingham, Dundee, The West Yorkshire Combined Authority, Oxford, Cambridge, Wolverhampton, and Slough. The project is expected to result in 400 new rapid chargers and 150 fast chargepoints being installed across these areas which will enable the take-up of around 23,000 electric taxis nationally including supporting existing plug-in private hire vehicles.

The funding coincides with the opening of a brand new London Taxi Company (LTC) factory in Coventry, which will have the capacity to assemble more than 20,000 vehicles per year. This factory is being welcomed by Business Secretary Greg Clark and Transport Minister John Hayes as an indication that the UK is at the forefront of new automotive technology.
