What Are Different Erasers Capable Of?

Erasers come in at least five different varieties.
After describing each, I’ll offer some general tips for selecting drawing supplies. I’ll keep this short, so don’t worry:-).

Pink Pearl

You’ve probably used the ‘pink pearl,’ as they say. That word combination originally referred to a specific item made by the company Paper Mate.

Since the product was a best-seller, its name has come to represent all reliable all-purpose erasers (such as those with a nub on the top of a regular pencil).

Pink pearls can actually be white, yellow, green, or any other color.

Typically, they are constructed of natural rubber and finely ground pumice (volcanic ash). Due to its abrasive nature, pumice’s particles can erase some pen and pencil lines.

The accuracy of those firm erasers is adequate. A pink pearl draws graphite by gradually tearing through the paper. You run the risk of tearing your artwork when rubbing too vigorously.

Artistā€™s Gum Eraser

The texture of art gum is very soft and doesn’t rip paper.

But be aware that the gum-like substance (natural or synthetic rubber combined with vinyl compounds) leaves behind numerous tiny particles. The graphite-coated “crumbles” often leave haphazard marks.

Such an eraser is ideal for erasing large areas, but it won’t be your go-to tool for erasing small details.

Art gums come in a range of hues, from brown to semi-transparent.

Vinyl Eraser

‘Plastic’ or vinyl erasers are typically white.

Plastic erasers smear nothing and remove almost everything, including ink, because the pigment is absorbed into the scraps of vinyl that are thrown away.

In contrast to a typical pink pearl, these erasers are not abrasive, but they occasionally ruin paper by crumpling it when you apply a lot of pressure.

In my opinion, a vinyl eraser should only be used to quickly and completely remove small pencil marks.

Phthalates, a chemical additive that gives stationery plastic its flexibility, are another issue with vinyl. They are thought to be potentially dangerous.

Today, a lot of large companies (like Faber-Castell) produce robust erasers free of phthalates. Look for products that have the designation “PVC-free.”

That is simply a pencil with an eraser inside of it as opposed to a lead. These rods are typically made of vinyl, which has both benefits and drawbacks.

Super-precise erasing is possible with an eraser in pencil form that can be sharpened to a point.

You can read my previous post about the ARTEZA eraser-tip pencil here.

Kneaded (Putty) Erasers

This creative tool resembles gray chewing gum. The plastic consistency of this material makes stretching it simple.

Kneaded erasers work similarly to the others by removing pigmented particles, but they don’t leave behind any smearing particles or damage paper.

If you draw with regular pencils or charcoal sticks, you must have that “chewing gum” texture. You can use it to illuminate any tiny dark areas.

A kneaded eraser works best when it is pressed and rotated rather than rubbed.

The drawback is that you’ll frequently need to pull and fold your putty eraser in order to keep the surface smooth. Soft erasers are frequently washed by artists when they get dirty.

A Brief History of Erasers

Before the invention of the eraser, pencil marks could be erased by rolling up a piece of white bread with the crusts cut off (some artists still use bread to lighten charcoal or pastel marks). The invention of the eraser is attributed to English engineer Edward Naime (1770). According to legend, he studied the properties of a piece of rubber rather than the customary wad of bread. The first practical use of the substance, which gets its name from its capacity to remove pencil marks, was when Naime started selling rubber erasers.

Like bread, rubber was perishable and would eventually go bad. Charles Goodyear developed the vulcanization method in 1839, which paved the way for the widespread use of rubber. Erasers became widely used.

Hymen Lipman was granted a patent in 1858 for fastening erasers to the ends of pencils, but the patent was later revoked because it combined two existing products rather than creating a new one.

How Do Erasers Work?

Graphite flecks are picked up by erasers and removed from the paper’s surface. In essence, eraser molecules are “stickier” than those in the paper, so when an eraser is rubbed over a pencil mark, graphite adheres to the eraser rather than the paper. Some erasers remove the top layer of paper as well as damage it. The erasers that come with pencils absorb the graphite particles, leaving a residue that needs to be brushed away. This kind of eraser can remove the paper’s surface. The erasers that come with pencils are harder than soft vinyl erasers, which are otherwise comparable.

To erase large areas of pencil marks without tearing up the paper, use art gum erasers, which are made of soft, coarse rubber. These erasers produce a lot of waste.

Erasers that are kneaded resemble putty. These flexible erasers are capable of absorbing charcoal and graphite without degrading. If kneaded erasers are too warm, they might stick to the paper. Eventually, they accumulate enough graphite or charcoal that they no longer effectively pick up particles and must be replaced.

Frequently Asked Questions

A kneaded eraser has a life expectancy of how long?

Unlike kneaded erasers, regular erasers tend not to last as long as the ones in the package. Years may pass before you need to replace your old kneaded eraser. When I need to replace a kneaded eraser, what should I look for to determine if it needs to be replaced? You know the eraser is working if it leaves a dirty mark instead of erasing; likewise, if kneading does not clean any more, then there is no graphite or charcoal left on the eraser.

Kneaded erasers stink. Could you please explain this?

Erasers absorb graphite as they knead. Non-graphite materials could also be picked up by this device, which was counterproductive. Think about the eraser picking up some vegetables you ignored. Erasers decompose slowly, releasing unpleasant odors when decomposing vegetables.

What happens if you use a kneaded eraser that becomes toxic?

The kneaded eraser can go bad when we handle and store it improperly. Erasers that won’t work are hard and brittle. Drawing papers may become irreparably damaged, including tears, when using a hard eraser. During erasing, pieces of kneaded eraser take up space on the surface of the workstation and are unsightly. The eraser is also gradually consumed, leaving it significantly smaller than when purchased.

Can Kneaded Erasers be washed?

If you use soap or dishwashing liquid, your kneaded eraser will not wash. These tools are made from oil and carbonated rubber. Thus, the soap will dissolve your eraser. The eraser will remain clean on its own, however. To maintain your eraser, you need only stretch, break, and knead it regularly. All you need to know is this. You can repeat this until all black marks disappear and the eraser is gray.

My kneeled eraser seems to be taking too long. What should I do?

When you learn and practice different erasing techniques, you will be able to get the best out of your kneaded eraser. Rather than dragging the eraser across a page, dab the eraser on it instead. Knitted erasers can lift away material from pages while regular erasers cannot. As a result, fewer eraser bits need to be brushed off.

the best pen eraser is an essential tool for any writer. Whether you’re a professional that needs to use pens all day or just like the feel of writing on paper, it’s important to have a reliable way of getting rid of those mistakes. A simple pencil eraser can be used for small corrections but if your mistake is more substantial than that, there are other options available as well.

For example, gum and rubber erasers work great when you need to correct larger sections at once while sandpaper and electric ones are better suited for removing ink marks from surfaces such as glossy photo prints. No matter which type you choose, make sure they come in different colors so it’s easier to find one based on what kind of surface correction
