Making Low Emissions Driving More Affordable
The Government offers up to £4,500 off the price of a new electric car, and up to £8,000 off the price of a new electric van. The official names for these grants are the Plug-in Car Grant and the Plug-in Van Grant.
The Plug-In Car Grant gives you 35% off the showroom price of an eligible car, up to £4,500. Eligible cars are split into three categories:
- Category 1: Cars with a zero emission range of over 70 miles will receive a grant of £4,500 (covering pure electric cars such as the BMW i3 and Nissan LEAF)
- Category 2: Cars that have CO₂ emissions of less than 50g/km and a zero emission range of between 10 and 69 miles (typically hybrids such as the Audi A3 e-tron and Toyota Prius Plug-in) will receive £2,500.
- Category 3: Cars with CO₂ emissions of 50 to 75g/km and a zero emission range of at least 20 miles will also receive £2,500.
How To Access The Grants
There is no complexity in accessing the grant. When you buy your vehicle, the dealership will complete all of the paperwork on your behalf at point of purchase.
The grant is administered by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and they have set a number of criteria that eligible cars have to meet; these include ensuring all cars meet the same safety requirements found in petrol or diesel cars.
You can also access a Plug-in Grant if you need a van. The grant will give you 20% up to £8,000 of the price of a van. Again, applied as you buy.
