About Go Ultra Low

Go Ultra Low is a ground-breaking joint government and industry campaign which aims to increase purchase consideration of electric vehicles by helping motorists and fleets understand the benefits, cost savings and capabilities of the wide range of electric vehicles on the market.

The campaign is funded by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and eight vehicle manufacturers working in association with the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). The vehicle manufacturers currently supporting the campaign are: Audi, BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Renault, Toyota and Volkswagen.

The Facts

Whoever you are, there is an electric vehicle for you

  • Whether you are looking for a 4×4, a family hatchback, a saloon, a sports car or a van there is an electric vehicle suitable for you
  • Over 90,000 British drivers have already switched to electric
  • Most major vehicle manufacturers now make an electric car. These models include plug-in hybrids, pure electric cars and hydrogen fuel cell cars
  • There are now over 35 models that are eligible for a plug-in grant, with around 40 more on the way in the next few years

Motorists who switch to electric cars save hundreds of pounds a year

  • Fuelling an electric car costs from just 2p per mile, compared to around 10-12p per mile for a typical petrol or diesel car
  • The average motorist could save around £800 per year in tax and fuel by switching to an electric car
  • Pure electric vehicles (costing less than £40,000) are currently exempt from Vehicle Excise Duty (road tax)
  • Government plug-in grants offer up to £4,500 off the price of an electric car, and up to £8,000 off the cost of an electric van
  • Other benefits include exemption from the London Congestion Charge and free parking in many areas
  • Electric cars require less maintenance compared to petrol or diesel cars, meaning British motorists could save £306 a year on repair bills by switching to an electric car

Every sort of journey can be taken in an electric vehicle, with ranges up to 800 miles

  • The electric vehicle with the longest range, the Audi Q7 plug-in hybrid, has a range of over 800 miles
  • From pure electric cars that are capable of up to 100 miles through range-extended cars (up to 200 miles) to plug-in hybrids (up to 800 miles), there is an electric car that is suitable for everyone
  • The average daily commute in the UK is less than 10 miles (ONS). Pure electric vehicles can travel around 100 miles on a full charge, while plug-in hybrids can travel several hundred miles
  • 5 million motorists (36%) never drive further than 80 miles in a single trip (Go Ultra Low survey Jan 2015)
  • Nearly half of drivers living in London did not drive further than 80 miles (in a single trip) during 2014
