Autumn Budget: Government announces support for electric vehicles

Today the Chancellor, Phillip Hammond, presented his Autumn Budget to Parliament. The Budget included some exciting news in support of the UK’s ambition to be a world leader in the development, manufacture and use of zero emission vehicles

The new measures announced today include:

  • support for the wider roll-out of charging infrastructure by investing £200 million, to be match funded by private investment, into a new £400 million Charging Investment Infrastructure Fund;
  • a commitment that 25% of cars in the central Government department fleets will be ultra low emission by 2022;
  • £100 million funding for the plug-in car grant;
  • £40 million research and development funding for infrastructure;
  • from April 2018, there will be no benefit in kind charge on electricity that employers provide to charge employees’ electric vehicles.
